From 1 July 2026 the tax rate on income between $18,201 and $45,000 fell from 16% to 15%. The calculator uses the 2026–27 rates by default, and you can switch to 2025–26 to compare.

How your pay is worked out

Example: $85,000 salary plus super, 2026–27.

  1. Income tax: $4,020 on the first $45,000, plus 30% of the $40,000 above it: $16,020.
  2. Medicare levy: 2% of $85,000: $1,700.
  3. Take-home pay: $67,280 a year, or $2,587.69 a fortnight.
  4. Your employer also pays 12% super, $10,200, into your super fund. It doesn’t come out of your pay.

The same salary in 2025–26 had $16,288 tax, so the new rate saves $268 a year at this income.

Offsets and the Medicare levy

  • Low income tax offset: up to $700 off your tax if you earn $37,500 or less, reducing to nothing at $66,667. On $40,000 it cuts tax from $3,270 to $2,695.
  • Medicare levy: 2% of taxable income. People on low incomes pay less or nothing; for 2025–26 the reduction starts at $28,011 and ends at $35,013. The 2026–27 thresholds haven’t been published yet, so the calculator uses the 2025–26 figures.
  • Medicare levy surcharge: if you earn over $105,000 as a single person in 2026–27 and don’t have private hospital cover, you pay an extra 1% to 1.5%. Tick “No private hospital cover” to include it.

HELP and study loans

Since 2025–26, compulsory repayments only apply to income above the threshold, like a tax bracket. For 2026–27 you repay nothing up to $69,528, 15c for each dollar above that up to $129,717, then $9,028 plus 17c for each dollar up to $186,050. Above $186,050 you repay 10% of your whole repayment income. On $130,000 the repayment is $9,076.11.

Salary packages that include super

Some job ads quote a total package including super. Choose “Yes, it’s a package including super” and the calculator divides by 1.12 to find the salary: a $112,000 package is a $100,000 salary plus $12,000 super.

What isn’t included

The calculator assumes you are an Australian resident for tax and claim the tax-free threshold from this employer. It doesn’t include salary sacrifice, family or spouse thresholds for the Medicare levy, fringe benefits, or deductions you claim on your return.
