How the conversion works

Everything goes through an hourly rate. A year is your hours per week times the weeks you’re paid for; a month is a twelfth of that.

  • Hourly to yearly: $25 an hour × 40 hours × 52 weeks = $52,000 a year, or $4,333.33 a month.
  • Yearly to hourly: £30,000 ÷ (37.5 hours × 52 weeks) = £15.38 an hour, or £115.38 for a 7.5-hour day.

Why a month isn’t four weeks

A year has 52 weeks, so an average month has about 4.33 weeks, not 4. Multiplying weekly pay by 4 understates monthly pay by around 8%. The calculator divides the yearly figure by 12 instead, which is how monthly salaries are paid.

Typical full-time hours

CountryCommon full-time week
United States, Canada40 hours
United Kingdom37.5 to 40 hours
Australia38 hours (the National Employment Standards maximum before extra hours)
New Zealand40 hours
UAE, Saudi Arabia40 to 48 hours

The calculator fills in a typical figure for the currency you choose. Change it to match your contract.

Paid and unpaid time off

If you are salaried or get paid holidays, leave “unpaid weeks off” at 0: you’re paid for all 52 weeks. Contractors and hourly workers who don’t get holiday pay should enter the weeks they won’t work, so the yearly figure reflects what they’ll actually earn.

Before or after tax?

These figures are gross pay, before tax and other deductions. To see what you’ll actually take home, use our pay calculators for the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Salaries in the UAE and Saudi Arabia have no personal income tax.
