How working days are counted

The calculator goes through every date in the period, skips the weekend days for your country and any public holiday that falls on a working day, and counts what’s left. By default it counts both the start date and the end date, which is how most people count a run of days off or a project timetable. Untick that option to count the days after the start date only, as many legal notice periods do.

Weekends by country

CountryWeekend
US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, EuropeSaturday and Sunday
United Arab EmiratesSaturday and Sunday since January 2022 (government offices also close on Friday afternoon)
Saudi ArabiaFriday and Saturday

Many businesses in the Gulf work a six-day week. If yours does, choose “Friday only” or “Sunday only”.

Which public holidays are included

  • UK: bank holidays for England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, taken from GOV.UK, including extra days such as coronations.
  • United States: the 11 federal holidays, moved to the Friday or Monday when they fall on a weekend, as federal offices do. Private employers and states may differ.
  • Canada: the federal statutory holidays in the Canada Labour Code. Provinces set their own lists for most workers; for example Ontario adds Family Day and doesn’t include the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Australia: the holidays kept in every state and territory. Add your state’s own days, such as Labour Day or Melbourne Cup Day, yourself.
  • New Zealand: the national public holidays including Matariki, with weekend holidays moved to the Monday as the Holidays Act requires. Regional anniversary days aren’t included.
  • UAE and Saudi Arabia: the official holidays, including Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Islamic holidays follow the lunar calendar, so dates in future years are expected dates until the moon sighting confirms them.
  • Europe: holidays vary by country, so only weekends are taken out.

Adding working days to a date

Choose “A date plus working days” to find a deadline, for example 10 working days for a refund or 20 working days to answer a request. The count starts on the day after the start date. Enter a negative number to count backwards.

For plain calendar days, ages and the time between two dates, use the age and date calculator.
